Looking Ahead…

It’s finally here…that’s right, next week kicks off yet another breast cancer awareness month! And while we certainly feel that you can never spread enough awareness about women’s cancers, October is a month where pink really shines!

We know that many of you will participate in various events in honor of this exciting month, but we are hoping that you will join the She Colors My Day team in a few tasks as well! Here are ways you can help us make EVERY month a women’s cancers awareness month:

1. Pass a pink crayon! We have made a special crayon just for this month! We hope that you will pass this crayon to friends and loved ones in order to spread awareness!

2. Invite people to join our Facebook community. By doing this you are helping to extend this exciting month… We strive to advance awareness of women’s cancers ALL year long! You never know who may be in need of a kind word, and we strive to support and encourage people all year long! As many of you know, we try and view women’s cancers in a different way; we focus on “thrivability” and creativity as a tool to get through difficult times!

3. Reach out and support someone you know, or may not know who has been afflicted with this horrible disease. If your neighbor is going through chemotherapy, take her family some freezer meals, or simply sit, provide company and lend an ear. Run a 5k in honor of a family member. Or maybe, like one She Colors My Day fan, hold a garage sale and donate the proceeds. The list of ways you can help is endless, but we encourage you to get involved.

Whatever way you get involved, we just wanted to wish you a pink and happy October!

A She Colors My Day Challenge!

Calling all She Colors My Day fans…

We have a challenge for you! As we looked at our messaging, it was obvious that we wanted to focus our content on love, strength and beauty; the courage each and every women’s cancer survivor possesses; and the amazing and unique bond between mother and daughter.

However, as we watched our platforms develop from a newly planted seed into a beautiful garden, we realized something else. All of our fans came together and built a wonderful community. A beautiful support network filled with love, compassion and kindness. We know that through your contributions and input, you have undoubtedly colored someone’s day with your kind words.

That being said, we felt it was important to focus on kindness as well. This coming week you may notice that we will be talking about kindess quite a bit. As October (breast cancer awareness month) peeks right around the corner, we are reminded now, more so than ever, that the kindness we show to others can really make the difference between “survive” and “thrive.”

So take a minute to reflect on the kindess that others have shown to you. Then, take another minute to think about how you might be able to pay that forward. Knit an extra winter hat for someone who may have lost all their hair in chemotherapy. Ask your small child to paint a picture that will certainly have the ability to brighten anyone’s darkest hour. Sing a happy birthday to someone who has no choice but to spend that birthday in the confines of a hospital bed. Love, create for a cure, and above all else, be kind.

Calling all She Colors My Day fans!

We need your help! As we are sure many of your know, October is breast cancer awareness month. And with October right around the corner (can you believe it?!), we are planning several very exciting things here at She Colors My Day!

As many of you know, we have a Facebook application, the Pink Crayon App, that allows users to  pass a crayon (and a smile) to their Facebook friends. Over 113,000 crayons have been passed by more than 16,000 people; isn’t that wonderful? Every crayon that has been passed has help to spread not only smiles, but awareness of women’s cancers. Pink Crayon AppIn honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we would like to redesign a special crayon to pass, but we need your help! We would love your input on the message and design of this special crayon. We value your support of this amazing miracle, and would love to hear from you!

Please let us know on Twitter or Facebook, or simply comment on our blog! Any way you provide us your feedback, we would LOVE to hear from you! Your input would really color OUR day!

Color Your Weekend

Woman Relaxing

Flickr user: kyliesdad777

As the weekend fast approaches, I am sure that visions of rest and relaxation dance in most of our heads. Week in and week out, we all work so hard to provide ourselves and our loved ones with as many comforts as possible. But when was the last time any of us stopped to self-reflect on our labors?

As we leave the work week behind and look forward to a three-day weekend, we at She Colors My Day wanted to “rest” a moment to reflect upon what we labor for; why we work so hard. We feel it’s so important to keep our goals, momentum, hope and dreams right in front of us, so that we remember to be appreciative of this miracle! In honor of Labor Day, we wanted to thank those who have worked so hard to make this miracle possible. Every day we work harder than we ever thought possible to provide a new day to those in need. Perhaps some of you fight even harder to provide support to someone affected by this horrible disease. Or, maybe, each and every day you look deep within yourself and gather your strength to thrive.

We would love to see a day free from women’s cancers; a day where mothers and daughters can simply enjoy creating and living in the moment. Let’s take a moment to also honor those who have labored so hard to fight this challenging battle.

This weekend, in honor of each of us, who has labored in this fight, one way or another, I challenge you to sign, dance, love, create; do something beautiful in honor of this wonderful community! And don’t forget to create something special this weekend; a relaxing environment for all those you love! Warmest wishes for a beautiful weekend full of relaxation; you deserve it!

Science is art!

At She Colors My Day, we have been amazingly lucky to be able to partner with Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund, as well as Susan G. Komen for the cure. We lovingly created the limited edition She Colors My Day t-shirt in order to support our efforts to fight women’s cancers!

We thought, however, you may want to know a little more about what your donation is supporting! The science behind it all is fascinating, as are the amazing team of scientists that make it all possible! Remember- science is an art, and these wonderful people are creating for a cure! We can all make a difference in this fight; please visit our website to find out the many wonderful smelling, creative, fashionable, fun and “danceable” ways you can help!!!

The Women’s Cancer Research Fund is committed to saving lives by raising funds and awareness for the millions of women and their families at risk for, or affected by cancer. The goal is to advance leading-edge science by supporting the efforts of the nation’s foremost investigators and advocates of women’s cancer research.

EIF’s Breast Cancer Biomarker Project is a multi-year effort led by world-class scientists to find a biomarker – a protein – that would reveal the presence of breast cancer in the blood to provide early detection, predict the potential for metastasis and guide therapeutic response.

Detecting breast cancer early is the single most important thin we can do to save lives. Most women who die of breast cancer do so because the disease was detected when it was too advanced to cure. So how do we catch it early enough? It’s a question that EIF’s Breast Cancer Biomarker Discovery Consortium endeavors to answer. Our blood holds the key in molecules called biomarkers – unique proteins that may signal the presence of cancer. The goal of the consortium project, sponsored by the Entertainment Industry Foundation/Women’s Cancer Research Fund, is to discover which biomarkers are related to breast cancer.

Through an ambitious scientific effort called EIF's Biomarker Discovery Project, world-class scientists are collaborating to develop a blood test that will detect breast cancer in its beginning stages, when it can be cured.

The foundation program has assembled a group of scientists at the leading edge of technology to discover molecular signlas for breast cancer. The study brings together experts in the fields of proteomics, informatics and clinical breast cancer care. The group consists of Bobel Laureates, internationally recognized scientists and leaders of some of the best scientific inistutions. Never before has a group of this caliber collaborated on such an ambitious biomarker study – and this groundbreaking approach is made possible by the Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s leadership and vision.

Scientists conceptualize the project in three stages:

Stage One – apply leading proteomics and gene expression technologies to examin blood, tissue and breast fluids to identify hundreds of biomarker candidates. Close collaboration of the project’s clinical breas cancer experts and technology leaders is critical.

Stage Two – develop assays (tests) to measure the biomarkers at very low concentrations in the blood.

Stage Three – confirm the presence of the most promising biomarkers in hundreds of blood samples from healthy women and women with breast cancer.

The Breast Cancer Biomarker Discovery Consortium’s vision for progress is shared internationally by scientific leaders: support and momentum are growing for the development of biomarker discovery. The EIF is taking a crucial role in advancing the field of biomarker research by funding this important project.

Progress:

As part of a multi-year scientific project, a team of dedicated scientists from around the country have been collaborating, mapping out pathways to creating a blood test to detect breast cancer. Tremendous progress has been made.

In our first year the scientific team built and tested technologies and instruments that could “see” the types of biomarkers needed for an early detection test. We now have these tools.

In our second year we applied those technologies to determine whether we could detect differences between breast cancer and normal breast tissue. We discovered it was possible.

In our third year we completed our blood biomarker “discovery” work. We now have a defined list of candidate biomarkers.

In the next three years we will develop tests to measure the abundance of these biomarkers in the blood of hundreds of breast cancer patients. The ultimate result will be a list of biomarkers prime for clinical research.
